Breaking Down the Barriers to Outside Office Work in the Summer

Breaking Down the Barriers to Outside Office Work in the Summer

Have you ever stared out of your office window longing to feel the beautiful summer sun on your skin or the light summer breeze on your face?

If the answer is yes… have you ever tried going to a park or to your offices green space to work?

Here at ErgoMania we believe that taking your work outside on a nice day for an hour or so can be beneficial to your well-being and consequently your productivity.  And we aren’t the only ones!  Research shows that spending time outdoors is good for your mental health.

That said, we understand that being outdoors provides some barriers to typical office work. We have experienced those challenges first hand!

Here are some quick tips to help make working outdoors a breeze:

Intense Squinting:

When working outside, the sun can effect your visibility in 2 ways:
1.  You have the sun in your eyes
2.  The sun is reflecting off your screen

This might look a bit silly, but as a solution you can do a 360 degree turn with your laptop in your hands before you settle down and pick the angle where the sun least affects you and your screen.  You can also wear a ball cap and sunglasses or park yourself under an umbrella.

As a long term solution, invest in a glare screen protector. These greatly minimize the amount of glare you will face from your laptop.

Flying Papers

Flying Papers:

The wind can be a bit of a downer when you are working with loose papers.  But don't worry - we have some quick fixes for this too!

Bring your document holder and that should do the trick.

Sizzling Skin:

If you have sensitive skin and are prone to sunburns. Apply sunscreen!   Or find a shady area, to get out of the direct sizzle zone.

Laptop on Knees

Uncomfortable seating position:

Sometimes it's a challenge to sit comfortably outside.  One of the most common problems is having your laptop on your knees.

Try to find a platform to set your laptop on.  A couple examples would be an outdoor dining table, or a picnic table.

It's not necessary but if your office chair is easy to move bring it out with you!

This temporary outdoor set-up is not meant for prolonged sitting. Enjoy your outdoor workspace in moderation and you will be set.

So what are you waiting for!?! Get out there and enjoy SUMMER an hour at a time!
